An awesome course. Very easy to follow at the start, becomes more challenging at the end. I have a PhD in economics yet I struggled with the real analysis at the end. And that's just intro level! Great course, it's really shows the way how to think in mathematical rigor. It gave me an intuition about what Mathematics is itself. Peer review assignments can only be submitted and reviewed once your session has begun. If you choose to explore the course without downloading, you may not be able to access certain assignments. When you download a Certificate you get access to all course materials, including graded assignments. Upon completing the course, your electronic Certificate will be added to your Accomplishments page - from there, you can print your Certificate or add it to your LinkedIn profile. If you only want to read and view the course content, you can audit the course for free. Basically, this means that if you stick with the course and complete all the work diligently, you should get a passing grade.

This initial orientation lecture is important, since this course is probably not like any math course you have taken before — even if in places it might look like one! This may all look like easy stuff, but tens of thousands of former students found they had trouble later by skipping through Week 1 too quickly! Be warned. If possible, form or join a study group and discuss everything with them.

Learning tricks is all fine and good, but learn to be a problem solver because if you practice little by little and give yourself a chance you can find real joy in a skill far too few people have.

The author thoroughly defines and uses the traditional symbols for logical combinators, quantifiers, and conditionals. He develops the very difficult concept of writing complete, effective proofs.

It's a little book on what at first appears to be a small subject. Don't be fooled, though. This is a tough, comprehensive study. This book and the associated Coursera course were transformative. I'm a self-taught programmer of some 20 years who went straight into a career and missed out on the college experience.

I've always read programming books and more recently watched videos and taken online courses about it. This book changed fundamentally the way that I look at the material and helped me break the "symbol barrier".

I would recommend it to any of my colleagues even those that may have had college but did not have access to Keith Devlin's unique teaching style.

Very interesting reading, made me realize the similarity between writing with intelligent grammar and analytic thinking.

I downloadd this book to go with a class on the same subject. The information is very good and helpful. The problem is that the Kindle version is missing some of the mathematical symbols in the text. Until I took the free course from Coursera class "Introduction to Mathematical Thinking" The book was not very helpful.

This is great at explaining concepts and highlighting which areas to focus. That said, after reading a few times and getting comfortable with concepts, I wish the problems had a solutions guide so I could check my work! One person found this helpful. The author does say that this book is not for self study at home. He is correct when he says this.

He states that this book is also for group study so that the answers can be discussed. This is difficult when you are a singular person.

I am retired and just thought that I could brush up on mathematics and what kind of thinking can make it easier. This is not the book for that purpose and certainly not for me. Maybe it is a good book for those that are mathematically inclined; but i guess that that is not me. For the right person or rather group of people it may be a 5 star book. The answers are also not included in the book. This also makes it very difficult for singular study.

For the size of this small book Mr. Devlin is a HIT! It is filled with information and ideas that connect math to actually thinking about it and not just memorizing Algorithms but truly thinking about why! This book is part of the best reading of this year. It is well suited to high school and early college years.
