Another breed classic, this big book is again full of stories about the old time dogs and their history. The book has over color and black and white photos of these dogs along with historical photos of old artwork showing the breed. There are many important pedigrees of famous pit bulls reprinted in the back of the book along with an index, and info on how to house and care for the dogs properly. A thick book full of good color photos, it discusses some of the bull breeds, mastiff breeds, and shepherd breeds often used for guard dogs.
The pit bull is included although they are not a guardian breed, yet any good dog will bark and protect their family. Each breed is discussed with lots of good color photos and breed standard, with other chapters on selecting the right breed and more on guard dogs and their uses.
The book is divided into three sections and Richard Stratton wrote the introductions to each section. Over dogs are shown in rare photos, most of which have never been published before, and all the famous lines are represented, including Tudor, Colby, Heinzl, Carver, Sorrells, Boudreaux, and many others.
Each page shows two dogs so the photos are large, and there is a short pedigree of each dog. There is an Index in the back of the book which makes it easy to use for historical research.
A rare glimpse into the bygone days of the breed. Out of print. Here is the second book by Stratton and it is also a classic.
It is about twice as big as his first book and has about black and white and color photos of famous dogs. He writes about the dogs including Tudor's Dibo, and some of the great dogmen behind them such as Bob Wallace, Howard Heinzl, and many others. There is also much about the history of the breed and what made them along with chapters about modern day laws. There is a useful Index in the back of the book listing all the dogs shown in the photos. A wonderful look at the history from the golden age of the dogs and the men that shaped the breed.
Much info on Tudor, Heinzl, Colby, Lightner, and other dogmen along with articles about their best dogs.
