Sociology in our times: Diana Elizabeth Kendall Publisher: Boston MA: Cengage Learning, Print book: I am not an expert on Sociology, and I am aware this is not necessarily a fair comparison - but when I read, say, my Psycology textbooks, I am actually drawn in and interested.

I want to keep reading. Though I am but a student, I can tell that the book is going fairly in-depth to the subject matter - I'm not just getting superficial "factoids" or an overview. In contrast, this textbook is pretty boring, and I am left with nagging questions about almost all of the subjects covered. Why are they important? Where is the research? Some of these things seem like common sense, sure, but other surprises are just given at face value with no explanation.

It also seemed like a disproportionate amount of time was spent parading about the names and biographies of famous sociologists.

That is all well and good, but I wanted to learn about Sociology, not sociologists Finally, I am aware that the average college freshman has a reading level of about eighth grade I guess that would have to be my biggest issue: I absolutely despise textbooks which are stuffed with "activity corners" or whatever they call them - those attention-grabbing, colorful distractions which take up half a page to show how the material at hand is applicable to some totally irrelevant subject.

Supposedly these boxes are made to show to students how the subject is relevant to their daily lives, but they honestly get in the way of learning, and this text in particular is chock-full of them. It was a rare instance where I could read two full pages of unabridged, unadultered text with no annoying photograph, info box, or other "fluff" getting in the way.

The only reason I have not returned this book is because at the end of the day, if I just read it as a novel - for entertainment!

Much like a taboloid or Newsweek Magazine, I suppose. Paperback Verified download. Great for a rental. The pages are bent and the corners are folded, but its still in decent condition.

No highlighter or writing. It'll definitely work for the class I'm taking and save me a load of money.

Definitely recommend renting this book. One person found this helpful. It was the book I needed, and it was the book I got. I bought it used since the new hardcover cost about three times as much.

It finally came in, yet, they shipped me the instructors edition, which was no problem for me although my class mates wondered why my textbook was a different color than theirs. Once I received it, I spent over and hour trying to take off the blocking adhesive paper on the back cover and the spine of the textbook to distract me from noticing it was an instructor's edition. The price was great, the book was great.

Gayle Crabtree. Loose Leaf Verified download. I am pleasantly surprised with the loose leaf textbook. The binder has been an easy place to store the textbook, my class notes and handouts.

It's very convenient. Although the way the subject matter is handled is confusing for me, at least the loose leaf format is working out very well.

I also have it on the Kindle version and enjoy the reader feature on the digital version of the textbook. I really don't like Sociology, but understanding the way we communicate is very important. This book has sown me some ways to better my communication skills and how to be a more understanding listener.

Exactly what I wanted. Book just arrived today and right off the bat you can see how bad this book has been taken care of. Your still about to read the Important stuff but the book seems to have been cut and some water damage. Nice looking book but dropped the class before using it.
